Learning to do things in mirrored direction is nothing new! It’s known as mirror movement development (MMD) and has been practiced by some pretty famous people throughout history.
The Ancient Greeks wrote in both mirrored and traditional directions since the 12th century B.C. This style of MMD handwriting is known as Boustrophedon and uses both hands. Traditionally, this use of both hands has been known as Ambidexterity. Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine, told people in the ancient world that we should practice MMD by doing things equally with both hands. Both Harry Houdini (the famous magician) and Benjamin Franklin (our greatest U.S. Founding Father) thought that MMD should be taught to kids in school! Frankin wrote all about it in a creative letter to teachers called, A Petition of the Left Hand. He also read in mirror direction for 30 years and inspired Thomas Jefferson to develop ambidexterity! Another person who practiced MMD was Leonardo da Vinci, who wrote in mirror direction for nearly 50 years. Other historic MMD practitioners include Nikola Tesla, Queen Victoria, Mahatma Gandhi, Jimi Hendrix, Amadeus Mozart, Paul McCartney, and more.
Even great athletes have practiced a spectrum of MMD, including Lebron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rodney Mullen, Bob Burnquist, Paul Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird, Pete Rose, Mickey Mantle, Gordie Howe, Lionel Messi, and more.
Practicing MMD does incredible things for your brain and body! This shouldn’t surprise us since the human body is designed to make equal left and right movements just like a car, which is designed to make equal left and right turns. The benefits of MMD include improved balance, memory, creativity, longevity, athleticism, and more!
